Understanding the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a points-based system used by Canada’s Express Entry program to assess and score your profile. This blog explains how the CRS works and how you can calculate your points.

How CRS Points are Calculated

CRS scores are awarded based on several factors:

Core Human Capital Factors:

Age, education, work experience, and language proficiency.

How many points can I get for age? Up to 110 points if you are aged 20-29.

How many points for education? Up to 150 points for a doctoral degree.

How are language scores translated into CRS points? Up to 160 points for superior language abilities in English or French.

Spouse or Common-Law Partner Factors:

Education, language skills, and work experience.

Do I get additional points for my spouse? Yes, up to 40 points.

What if my spouse doesn’t speak English or French? Your spouse’s language skills can contribute up to 20 points, but it’s not mandatory that they do.

Skill Transferability Factors:

Education and work experience combined with language proficiency.

How do skill transferability factors work? Points are awarded based on combinations of education, foreign work experience, and Canadian work experience.

How many points can I earn? Up to 100 points.

Additional Factors:

Provincial nomination, Canadian education, job offer, siblings in Canada, French language skills, and more.

How much is a provincial nomination worth? A provincial nomination adds 600 points to your CRS score.

What about a job offer? A valid job offer can add up to 200 points.
