PARENT AND GRANDPARENT SPONSORSHIP UPDATE 2018

Updated: Apr 22, 2020

PARENT & GRANDPARENT SPONSORSHIP - LOTTERY UPDATE

According to the CBC, the Canadian government has released plans to increase the number of family sponsorship applications accepted in 2019 and 2020.  The federal government will admit up to 20,500 parents and grandparents through the reunification program in 2019 and 21,000 in 2020.

Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) plans to reach these targets by accepting 20,000 applications in 2019. In the past, applications were accepted based on luck. The previous system drew applicants from a lottery in an effort to allow each applicant a fair chance of being selected. Now, applicants will be invited based on when they submit their sponsorship forms. Those who submit their forms first have a better chance of being accepted. In other words, the new system will run on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Once applicants receive an invitation, they have 90 days to submit a complete application.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

In order to qualify for the parent or grandparent sponsorship program, there are certain requirements applicants must meet. First, you must meet the basic family sponsorship requirements. This means you must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older

  • Canadian citizen;

  • or Person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act;

  • or Permanent resident of Canada (you must be able to support your parent or grandparents financially, ensure they don’t need social assistance from the government and provide you with the essential needs for them and yourself)

To sponsor your parents or grandparents, you must meet certain income requirements and be able to support that person and their dependants financially.

You and the sponsored relative (i.e. your parent or grandparent) must sign a sponsorship agreement that: commits you to provide financial support for 3-20 years, depending on their age and relationship to you beginning on the date they become a permanent resident. The agreement also states that the person wishing to become a permanent resident will make every effort possible to support themselves financially
