Everything You Need To Know About The Caregiver Pilot Program
Caregivers from abroad play an important role in supporting Canadian families who are unable to find the care they need for a family member in Canada. If you're interested in moving to Canada as a caregiver, there are three different programs that you may be eligible to apply under to make your goals a reality!
In this blog, we will be outlining the three caregiver programs and their eligibility requirements in order for you to make the best decision when embarking on this immigration journey.
What are the three different caregiver programs?
There are three pathways under this program that you can apply for if you meet their eligibility requirements:
Home Child Care Provider
Home Support Worker Pilot
Live-In Caregiver Program
1. Home Child Care Provider
The Home Child Care Provider Pilot is a 5-year program for caregivers and their family members to come to Canada with the goal of becoming permanent residents.
A home child care provider provides ongoing or short-term care to children. In addition to providing child care, these professionals may assist parents with household tasks and care for the well-being of children.
Eligibility Requirements for the Home Child Care Provider Program
To be eligible for the home child care provider program, applicants must:
Have a valid work permit
Have work experience in Canada.
Have at least 1 year of full-time work experience since November 30, 2014 (cumulative work experience is accepted)
Experience working in a job that aligns with the relevant NOC code.
Meet the language requirements.
Have a minimum Canadian High School Diploma or a foreign diploma, certificate, or credential that’s equivalent.
How to apply for the Home Child Care Provider Program
This application is filed online to IRCC, the applications are competitive and you need to apply in January when the program opens. We suggest having your documents ready including your language results and ECA report before the program reopens in January 2023.
2. Home Support Worker Pilot
The Home Child Care Provider Pilot is a 5-year program for caregivers and their family members to come to Canada with the goal of becoming permanent residents.
Home support workers provide personal care and companionship for seniors, persons with disabilities and convalescent clients. Care is provided within the client's residence, in which the home support worker may also reside.

Have a valid work permit
Have work experience in Canada.

3. Live-In Caregiver Program
LCP (Live-In Caregiver Program) allows foreign nationals to work with a Canadian family as a nanny or caretaker for children or someone with disabilities. Foreign nationals can apply for permanent residence after just two years of experience with the LCP work permit. This program is being phased out, so you'll need to already be in Canada with a valid Live in Caregiver work permit, or an LMIA-based work permit where you live in the employer's home.
