How to Immigrate to Ontario as an Entrepreneur: OINP Entrepreneur Stream

The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) Entrepreneur Stream is designed to help foreign entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses in Ontario, Canada. The program allows entrepreneurs who meet specific criteria to apply for permanent residency in Canada and receive support in starting and growing their businesses. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to apply for the OINP Entrepreneur Stream.

Step 1: Eligibility Assessment

The first step in applying for the OINP Entrepreneur Stream is to determine if you meet the eligibility criteria. To be eligible, you must:

  • Have a minimum net worth of CAD$400,000 (outside of the GTA)

  • Have a minimum of two years of business ownership experience in the past five years

  • Make a minimum personal investment of CAD$200,000 in your business in Ontario (outside of the GTA)

  • Create at least two permanent full-time jobs for Canadian citizens or permanent residents in the province

  • Meet language requirements by scoring a minimum of CLB level 4 on the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) in either English or French

  • Be able to provide a detailed business plan that outlines your proposed business in Ontario, you can plan to open a new business or purchase a new business

Step 2: Register an EOI and submit an application

During this stage of the process you will need to submit an Expression of Interest. If selected, you will be invited to submit an online application. You (and your business partner if you have one) will need to attend a mandatory interview with the government, and if successful, you’ll sign a performance agreement.

Step 3: Start the business and submit part 2 of the application

You’ll then get a temporary work permit so that you can get a temporary work permit to work in Canada. You have 20 months to execute on your business, and then a final report is due to the province. If your business meets the requirements, then you’ll receive a provincial nomination.

Step 4: Submit a Federal Permanent Residency Application and Wait for a Decision

Once your application has been submitted, you will need to wait for a decision from the Federal government. You’ll need to give your medicals during processing. Once the application is approved, you are landed in Canada as a permanent resident.

Applying for the OINP Entrepreneur Stream can be a complex process, but with the right preparation and support, it can be a great opportunity for foreign entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses in Canada. If you are interested in applying for the OINP Entrepreneur Stream, make sure to research the eligibility criteria, prepare a detailed business plan, and work with an immigration consultant to ensure that your application is successful.
