The first step in your journey to studying abroad in Canada is determining your eligibility. There are certain criteria you must meet in order to be considered eligible to study in Canada. During the time you hold a study permit, you must:

  • Be enrolled at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)

  • Make progress towards the completion of your program

  • Respect all conditions listed on your study permit

  • Stop studying if you no longer meet the requirements and

  • Leave Canada when your permit expires

HOW TO APPLY FOR A CANADIAN STUDY PERMIT


Every year, thousands of foreign nationals come to Canada to study at our universities, colleges, and high schools. Durham Region is home to several leading Canadian colleges and universities, including the University of Ontario Institute Technology (Oshawa), Centennial College (Scarborough/Pickering/Toronto), Trent University (Peterborough/Oshawa), and Durham College (Oshawa). Today, we will break down the requirements and steps involved in applying for a study permit in Canada.

  • A family member or staff member of a foreign representative to Canada;

  • A member of a foreign armed force in Canada on official duties;

  • A Registered Indian; or

  • A minor (i.e. a child in kindergarten, a child with refugee status or parents with refugee status, are already in Canada with a parent who is allowed to work/study in Canada).

BEFORE YOU APPLY

  1. In order to apply for a Canadian study permit, you must first obtain an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and possess a valid passport or travel document.

  2. Next, you must determine which documents you need for your application. Some documents you may be required to provide include:

  • Proof of acceptance (acceptance letter from the school you have been accepted to)

  • Proof of identity (i.e. a valid passport or travel document and two recent passport-sized photos)

  • Proof of financial support (i.e. bank statement, GIC, proof of student loan, bank draft, tuition receipt, etc.)

  • A letter of explanation that explains why you want to study in Canada and shows that you understand the responsibilities as a student.

HOW TO APPLY


Generally, those interested in studying in Canada should apply for a study permit before coming to Canada. There are two methods for application: online and in-person. Further, there are three options available for submitting an application. Applicants can apply within Canada, outside Canada, or at a Canadian port of entry.


Apply for a study permit within Canada

You must check to see if you are eligible to apply for a study permit within Canada. According to the Government of Canada, some individuals who are eligible include minor children in primary or secondary school, exchange/visiting students, holders of a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP), and more. For a full list of eligible parties, visit the list provided by the Government of Canada.

  • Apply Online – Create an online account and submit your documents digitally. Online applications do not require courier fees or mail delivery time. You will also avoid processing delays by submitting your application online. Further, you can submit additional documents quickly upon request. You will also receive updates on the status of your application.

  • Apply on Paper – Follow the Instruction Guide to complete a paper application and submit the completed document to the address listed in the application package.

Apply for a study permit outside Canada

  • Apply Online – Create an online account and submit your documents digitally. Online applications do not require courier fees or mail delivery time. You will also avoid processing delays by submitting your application online. Further, you can submit additional documents quickly upon request. You will also receive updates on the status of your application.

  • Apply on Paper – Download an application package to access the application guide and the required forms. Next, determine which documents you will need to apply and be sure to include them as per the specifications in your application. Be sure to pay your application fees and submit your application to the correct office.

Apply for a study permit at the port of entry (POE)

You can apply for a study permit at a Canadian port of entry if you are a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident of the U.S., a person who has lawfully been admitted to the U.S. for permanent residence, a resident of Greenland, or a resident of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon.
